Starting therapy can bring a mix of relief and uncertainty for families. Knowing what happens in therapy and what to expect can help ease worries and set the stage for a positive experience.
Getting Started
Therapy usually begins with an intake session that includes parents and caregivers. We take time to understand your child’s strengths, challenges, school experience, family dynamics, and goals. Building trust and comfort is always a priority.
What Sessions Look Like
For younger children: Therapy often includes play, art, games, and movement — all developmentally appropriate ways children express feelings and build skills.
For older children and teens: Sessions may involve conversation, reflection, skill-building, and evidence-based approaches like CBT or DBT, tailored to each child’s needs and learning style.
Creative approaches: Some children communicate best through drawing, storytelling, or hands-on activities; these strengths are welcomed and encouraged.
Parent & Family Involvement
Parents are an important part of the process. This may include check-ins, parent coaching, or family sessions when helpful. We collaborate with families so skills learned in therapy carry over into everyday life.
Progress & Support
Goals are set collaboratively and adjusted as needed. Therapy evolves as children grow, and sessions always move at a pace that feels respectful and supportive.
